Sun Safety Tips
6/20/2012 12:00:00 AM
With the summer season in full effect, there are a few things you should remember before having fun in the sun.
Tips to stay safe in the sun:
1. Cover Up
- Wear hats or visors
- Wear sunglasses with total UV protection
- Consider wearing lightweight pants and sleeves if you’re already sunburned, don’t have access to sunscreen or are especially sensitive to the sun
2. Lotion or Spray the Smart Way
- For the best protection, apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. The SPF rating – SPF 30, for example – means that you can avoid sunburn 30 times longer than if you were wearing no sunscreen at all
- You should apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours
3. Guard Against UVA and UVB
- UVA are less likely to cause sunburn but do penetrate deep into your skin, causing tanning. UVA rays can go through windows, clouds and lightweight clothing and are equally strong throughout the day and seasons
- UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer and cannot significantly penetrate windows. UVB rays are strongest between 10am – 4pm and from April to October
- Both types of rays can cause skin cancer by damaging skin cells
4. Hydrate
- Hydrate before and after outdoor and physical activities
- Bring along a bottle of water for quick access throughout the day
- Choose water over sugar-sweetened drinks
- Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables that contain a high amount of fluid
Summer is a great time to get out of the house and into the sun. Remember to follow these tips and stay healthy this season, and beyond!
